Much later in the game, Peter (and a wildly souped-up Harry Osborn) spring Tombstone from Kraven’s henchmen. But after defeating him, Miles and Peter learn that Marko’s haunted by memories of his daughter. You’ll literally collect these scattered memories across random alleys or atop skyscrapers in the boroughs of the city.

But from a project this obviously big and expensive, it all feels disappointingly undercooked. Instead, Spider-Man 2 plumps for a pretty confused take on the now venerable black suit/Venom’s origin storyline. It’s mashed together with an uncharacteristically large-scale invasion of New York by Kraven the Hunter (seeking worthy super-powered prey) and a tangle of other subplots and returning villains. The plot points are outlandish, the themes muddy, and Miles doesn’t really have enough to do. None of that’s necessarily a dealbreaker, though—the real problem is the characters.

The two leave the amusement park, thrilled at the possibilities for the future as Act 1 comes to a thrilling close. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is filled with fun things for patient players to find throughout their adventure. Go to the church in the south of Financial District, climb up the back of the church tower. Play as Miles and go invisible by pressing (after unlocking invisibility from story progress). Alternatively, can also focus on Stealth Crimes (which are slightly random), but going invisible with Miles is the easiest option.

It’s exciting that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has already been listed on Steam and the Epic Games Store, giving players more ways to experience this adventure. The final trailer shows more of Venom and a newly revealed villain in the form of Sandman. It also shows more of the Venom in the symbiote form and how it affects Peter mentally with the black suit, as well as how Venom becomes his own humanoid form by latching onto one of the characters. Instead of arriving on Earth via a meteorite, as it did in the video game, the Venom symbiote came to Earth already bonded to Spider-Man, fixing itself to him while he participated in the cosmic showdown SECRET WARS (1984).

By the middle of the first act, players will be reunited with Peter Parker’s best friend, Harry Osborn, the son of Norman Osborn, an iconic Spider-Man character who later becomes the Green Goblin. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s gameplay and its previous iterations, similarly plays like the Arkham series, Assassin’s Creed series, and even Ghost of Tsushima. The balance of combat and exploration are the main aspects of the gameplay.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, created by Insomniac Games and PlayStation in collaboration with Marvel Games, is a technological and graphical showcase utilizing tools like ray-tracing to bring the city of Marvel’s New York to life.

The 10-minute video highlighted how players will switch between Peter and Miles in the game, and their new combat abilities, including a fiendish Symbiote suit that grants Peter some aggressive new powers. The new trailer also showed off the new webwings mechanic, as well as the AR tech fitted to Peter’s and Miles’ lenses. Better still, players can expect the sequel to feature more than 65 suits based on the comics, films, and original designs. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 lets players swing through the streets of New York as Peter Parker and Miles Morales, facing off against formidable foes in an action-packed superhero adventure.

Despite being awash with paramilitary criminal organisations, New York has never felt more toothless and dull. Dialogue has this odd faux-wholesome tone, like you’re trapped in a corporate training video—all careful politeness and empty one-liners. Even in TG88 and tense confrontations, there’s no edge to anyone or any sense of an inner life. They’re so blandly nice it tips over into being unsettling—you keep getting that feeling like everyone’s waiting for you to leave so they can badmouth you behind your back. My hope for this sequel was that with the core action already perfected, there would be the space to improve on the wider formula, creating a more interesting New York playground. Instead, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 simply has more stuff—a bigger story, more pointless collectibles, sprawling skill trees, and double the Spider-Men.
